Premier David Eby has announced the removal of the controversial Clause 4 from the Tariff-Response Bill 7. This clause, which allowed the cabinet to implement or alter laws without a debate or vote in the legislature, had been widely criticized. The provincial government faced constant opposition over this provision.
The BC Conservatives had labeled Clause 4 of Bill 7 as undemocratic, while both the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade and the BC Chamber of Commerce initially supported the bill but later opposed it. Eby stated that he is withdrawing Clause 4 in response to concerns raised by the public, business leaders, and trade organizations.
The Economic Stability Tariff Response Act, introduced by Deputy Premier Nikki Sharma on March 13, was designed to enable the provincial government to make real-time decisions in the face of economic and foreign challenges.
