Canada’s main opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre, has announced that if elected, he will make it easier for Canadians to do business with one another and reward provinces that remove internal trade barriers.

Poilievre has unveiled his party’s Canada First plan, stating that his common-sense Conservative government would implement dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs. These tariffs would specifically target American goods that Canada can produce domestically, source from other countries, or do without.

For example, Poilievre suggested that Canada could retaliate against American steel and aluminum imports, as these are products that can be manufactured within Canada. He added that revenue generated from these tariffs would be used to support affected workers and businesses.

He emphasized that the government would not retain any of the tariff revenue. Additionally, Poilievre called for immediate approval of pipeline projects to boost Canada’s energy infrastructure.
