Mark Carney Poised to Take Over as Canada’s Prime Minister

BY Connect Newsroom, Mar 10, 2025 7:34 PM - REPORT AN ERROR

Insiders close to Carney have suggested that Canada's next federal election could be called on April 28 or May 5. Carney is also reportedly working on assembling a new cabinet.

Mark Carney may soon take over as Canada's Prime Minister. Carney discussed the transition plan with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today at the Prime Minister's Office. He mentioned that he would soon reach out to provincial leaders to address the strained relations with the US.

Insiders close to Carney have suggested that Canada's next federal election could be called on April 28 or May 5. Carney is also reportedly working on assembling a new cabinet.

Sources indicate that former minister Marco Mendicino, who previously announced he would not contest the next election, could be appointed as Carney's chief of staff. Mendicino was seen with Carney today at Parliament Hill.

Meanwhile, Pierre Poilievre, leader of the main opposition party, has criticized Carney, accusing him of concealing his record of advising Trudeau on inflation-boosting measures, including a carbon tax increase, during his five-year tenure as an adviser. Poilievre also pointed out that Carney had relocated his company's headquarters and jobs to the United States, accusing him of attempting to deflect attention from his multiple scandals.
