Transport Minister sentenced to jail in corruption case

BY Connect Newsroom, Oct 3, 2024 2:08 PM - REPORT AN ERROR

The investigation of this matter was completed by Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau a year ago

Singapore's Indian-origin former Transport Minister S. Iswaran has been sentenced to 12 months in jail on Thursday in a corruption case. They had received nearly 400,000 Singapore dollars' worth of gifts from the two businessmen as bribes over a period of seven years.

The investigation of this matter was completed by Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau a year ago. The judge said that the former transport minister abused his position instead of fulfilling the duty of being a public servant.

Iswaran was the leader of the People's Action Party. He resigned from the post in January after being accused of corruption. The investigating agency has seized gifts such as bottles of whiskey and wine, golf clubs and a Brompton bicycle from their residence. Eswaran took over as Singapore's Transport Minister in May 2021.
